How Does Education Transform a Scholarship Student’s Life?

The story of a young woman from Zambia, supported by the Fund for Education Austria (FFE), beautifully embodies the deep impact that education can have, both on an individual and their community. 

A Journey of Hope: The Story of a Young Woman from Zambia

In a small village in Zambia, where girls’ education was often seen as unnecessary, one young woman dared to dream. Growing up in a community where education for women was sacrificed for fieldwork, she found an early source of hope in children’s classes and junior youth programmes. These programmes planted a seed in her—a desire to learn and help others grow as well. 

She didn’t just want an education; she was determined to excel. With the encouragement of her family and a burning thirst for knowledge, she continued to study and joined the Preparation for Social Action programme. But challenges soon arose. With no educational resources beyond grade 10 in her village, she had to make a tough decision—to leave her family and travel 50 kilometers to her grandmother’s home to continue her schooling. Despite the distance and hardships, she completed grades 11 and 12 with distinction. 

However, financial challenges persisted. Unable to pay the full tuition fees, she couldn’t obtain her certificate right away. Undeterred, she returned to her village, took up farming to earn the money she needed, and continued her work as a regional children’s class coordinator. After two years of hard work, she cleared her debts, obtained her certificate, and enrolled in university with the assistance of FFE - Fund for Education. She graduated as a secondary school teacher and returned to her community to inspire and uplift other young women through services to the community.

Her journey exemplifies the powerful and lasting impact of education. But what exactly makes education so transformative?
